The Wearwell study into the effects of antifatigue mats was a breakthrough bit of industrial safety in many ways.

The research was done using staff from a company in Tennessee. The firm was experiencing a lot of work absence and a much higher accident rate than they had anticipated. The manufacturers of the anti fatigue mats provided them for free in exchange for being allowed to study the workforce over a twelve month period.

Prior to the Wearwell study nobody knew for sure whether mats like this could really make a true impact on worker health … or whether the benefits were subjective and related to simply the perceptions of those who used them.

In the Wearwell experiment all of the participants were asked to give the mats a score in several key areas of effectiveness and - along side that data - the company tried to measure true signs of increased productivity.

The Wear Well study produced really quite remarkable results.

In the year before the anti fatigue mats were introduced between 6% and 94% of the workers described their work surface as hard and very hard, respectively. All of the workers said they were very tired or exhausted after completing a full shift.

After six months of using the new matting - fatigue had dropped dramatically with all of the workers saying they were now only mildly tired after working a full shift. None of the workers described themselves as being either very tired or exhausted.

The rate of absenteeism dropped by more than twenty percent from what it was before and the average time lost due to injuries improved by over three hundred percent.

The company were able to achieve the double boost of reducing costs and increasing their productivity simply by investing in good quality mats for their employees.

The Wearwell Study only now one of many research programs that have looked at using anti fatigue mats for workers. The benefits are now beyond debate.
